EARLY COLLEGE INITIATIVE
The Early College Initiative (ECI) at the City University of New York (CUNY) develops and supports innovative public schools across New York City that provide students from a broad range of backgrounds the opportunity to earn both a high school diploma and an associate degree (or up to two years of transferable college credit) at no cost to students and their families. The schools are designed to support students who have been historically underrepresented in higher education.
Each early college school is developed as a partnership with a CUNY college, offering a coherent program of study to ensure students' success in high school, college, and beyond. In addition to the college partner, ECI schools in the 9-14 model have one or more employer partners that provide hands-on work experiences through internships and professional mentoring in order to prepare students for careers in high-growth industries.
The Early College Initiative at CUNY began in 2003 as part of the Early College High School Initiative, a nationwide project sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Due to the work of ECI, New York City has one of the highest concentrations of early college schools in the U.S. As of September 2014, 7,000 students were enrolled in 17 early college schools. Of these students, approximately 74.2% are either Black or Hispanic, and 69% qualify for free or reduced-price lunches.
